Kate glanced over her shoulder, seeing him staring at her butt, causing him to wink at her. She laughed, pleased to see the shadow that had darkened his eyes had passed. She could have kicked herself for mentioning his mum to himâhis pain had been obvious, but she knew she had to say something. She watched him drink half the glass of beer in one go. He was hotâshe could see where his hair was damp around his templesâand heâd loosened his tie. She shivered. He was so handsome it made her ache.
The band members were settling behind their instruments, ready to start playing, and she went over to Becca, grabbing her by the hand and leading her over to Alex. âCome on, you two,â she told them. âTime to start off the dancing.â
She reached for her wineglass as Alex led his new bride onto the dance floor. This part of weddings was the best, the formalities were done and it was too early for anyone to be sick or for fights to break out, and yet the few glasses of wine everyone had had were starting to mellow them out.
She smiled as Alex took Becca in his arms while everyone clapped and cheered. Her oldest friend looked ecstatically happy. The band began to play Bic Rungaâs âListening for the Weatherâ and she sighed. Josh used to play this for her in his room at uni, and it took her straight back to those intense, passionate days.
She felt a presence at her side and smiled up at Josh. He was holding his beer, and she looked at his hand, seeing the sprinkling of dark hair she knew continued up to the MÄori tattoo she used to trace when lying beside him in the semi-darkness.
âYou kept your ring.â
He glanced at her in surprise. âOf course. Why wouldnât I?â
She looked up at him. âYou told me you were going to burn everything connected with me.â
He studied her, then sipped his beer, looking back at the bride and groom, who seemed oblivious to everyone else. âI couldnât get the fire hot enough to melt it.â
Kate looked away.
He reached out and rubbed the back of his hand against her arm. âI said a lot of things that night I didnât mean.â He turned and put his beer down. âCome on.â
âWhat?â
He gestured over to the happy couple. She looked and saw Becca beckoning them to come onto the dance floor. âBest man and chief bridesmaid,â the bride called out, âget your arses over here.â
Kate looked up at Josh, eyes wide. She put down her wineglass, feeling her cheeks redden. âErâ¦â
Ignoring her obvious panic, Josh grabbed her hand and starting walking toward the dance floor. She tottered after him on her high heels, concentrating on not falling over. He probably wouldnât notice if she did, she thought as he strode out with his long legs. Heâd just continue walking, pulling her behind him like a caveman.
Reaching the middle, he turned her toward him. He slid his right hand around her waist, grasping her right in his big paw.
